Santo Domingo Pueblo War Shield
(#FCSHIE70)
19 inches in diameter. Thick hide disc painted ochre, black and white.
This shield has been repainted several times during its long life. The uppermost coat may represent a
diving eagle or other bird of prey, head down and wings folded, splitting the sky and spreading blood
with its destructive beak. This is quite an old shield, certainly dating back to the beginning of the 19th century.
Illustrated in, Spirits in the Art, by James A. Hanson pg.179.
