Leon Gaspard (1882-1964) Leon Gaspard was born in Vitebsk, Russia, in 1882, to parents that encouraged his artistic talents, as well as his move to Paris to study at the Academe Julian. Gaspard was enthralled by the creativity that was around him. For several years he studied and showed his works at the Paris Salon. In 1918, following a two-year recovery from an airplane accident, Gaspard moved to New York where would spend a short time exhibiting before settling in Taos, New Mexico. Gaspard was fascinated by the indigenous culture of New Mexico, and set out learning and painting. His vibrant style was rooted in Impressionism, and he resisted many modernist trends. Gaspard traveled and painted until his death in 1964. |
