ERIC SLOANE,
"Householder Bridge"
Eric Sloane's original pen and ink drawing for his book "Recollections in Black and White," which was published by Walker and Company in 1974. Eric used this illustration on page 40 to accompany another one on page 41. The caption reads: "Householder Bridge" These are two of nearly a hundred Ohio covered bridges from my original research album. For a while, Ohio had more covered bridges than Pennsylvania but over half of them were burned, many during the Civil War period. Ohio's bridges are unusual, some having flattish roofs and some having the wooden awnings shown in these two southern Ohio models. Both have since been destroyed." Eric Sloane was an expert on barns and covered bridges and studied them for most of his 85 years. Many of his 50 or so books are illustrated with his paintings drawings of covered bridges but the original illustrations are very rare today. See Forrest Fenn's "Seventeen Dollars a Square Inch, a tribute to Eric Sloane" in the book section of this web site. LYE3* |
